We’re looking for an Application Engineer with C# skills to develop, maintain, change and support an application as part of a multi-functional agile team.

Job description

As an experienced C# Application Engineer you’ll work within a small team on the ongoing development of a key system. You’ll need a track record of developing and enhancing legacy systems, refactoring to enhance digital opportunities and up-skilling of colleagues.

The system is constantly evolving to meet new requirements, as are the opportunities to enhance the system.

You will work closely with the product owner and experts across DWP and contribute to the ongoing development, support and administration of the system

This is a great opportunity to use your C# skills on day-to-day development requirements and project activities, to innovate and to provide technical support for colleagues within a multi-disciplined team.

Our ideal candidate will also have experience of working as part of a multi-disciplined team, with a good working knowledge of SQL including scripting. A knowledge of data visualisation tools is also desirable.

Responsibilities

• Implement best-practices to code securely, developing the application to reflect agreed requirements to agreed priorities (C# and SQL);

• Deliver quality software which is easy to maintain and clean to operate;

• Troubleshoot issues related to the application – technical and user related;

• Provide technical support on a specific application;

• Identify and resolve technical issues related to the application;

• Provide coaching and mentoring to Application Engineer colleagues and peers by utilising pair-programming;

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

Salary Information

Salary for this role is from £35,310 (Band min) to £40,666 (Band max).

Where the maximum salary of £40,666 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £4,142 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience. This would make maximum salary £44,808 for these candidates.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

Selection process details

Stage 1: Application

• In depth knowledge of .NET C#

• Experience of re-factoring legacy systems using C#

• Development of complex changes and enhancements – programming and build.

• Unit Testing \ TDD

• Carrying out rigorous testing of changes and enhancements.

• Upskilling of colleagues.

Stage 2: Interview

If you’re successful at sift stage you will be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams. There, you will be assessed against the following Behaviours and Technical Skills:

• Tools & Software– Familiar with a range of C# tools and code management software.

• Technical breadth - Demonstrate deep technical understanding for the role, to be able to constructively challenge and advise colleagues and other stakeholders on a range of technical issues.

A reserve list may be held for a period of 6 months from which further appointments can be made.

Reserve list candidates will be posted in merit order by location.
