We’re looking for Java Engineers to design, build and maintain our flagship service, Universal Credit.

Our Java Engineers are experienced developers who would like to continue to build and support well tested services to our users.
You will follow best practice and work in teams that deliver quality software products.
We work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, focussed on designing and building software products that make up services used by millions of people.
Our teams focus on operational stability, robustness, resilience, availability and quality for the code we produce.
Your responsibilities will include but are not restricted to, the following:
• Design and build the Universal Credit service including building reusable libraries.
• Coaching and mentoring your peers and more junior staff, supporting their professional development.
• Collaborate with senior engineers and the wider community to set the strategic direction for the department.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.
National Salary for this role is from £38,469 (Band min) to £41,480 (Band max).
Where the maximum salary of £41,480 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £15,000 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.
London Salary for this role is from £43,755 (Band min) to £45,919 (Band max).
Where the maximum salary of £45,919 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £10,561 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.
Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.
Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.
Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

Stage 1: Application
Applications must include:
1. A completed Personal Details application form.
2. A curriculum vitae including education, professional qualifications and full employment history, giving details of key achievements.
When giving details in your redacted CV you should highlight your experience in line with essential criteria below:
• Recent experience of Java (minimum version 11)
• Developing on cloud based environments like AWS and Azure.
• Experience of unit and functional testing and industry standard tooling for building tests such as Junit, Mockito and Cucumber.
• Experience of using SQL and noSQL database applications such as Postgres, MySQL, and MongoDB.
• A good understanding of TDD and BDD.
• Knowledge and experience of APIs, RESTful services and Microservice Architectures.

Stage 2: Coding Test
If you are successful with Stage 1, you will be invited to complete a coding exercise. You will have 5 working days to complete this activity. Further information will be given if you are invited to the coding test.
Stage 3: Interview
If you’re successful at the Coding Test, you will be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams.
There, you will be assessed against the experiences listed in the essential criteria above listed in Stage 1.

A reserve list may be held for a period of 6 months from which further appointments can be made.
