This is a fantastic opportunity to join DWP Hybrid Cloud Services as a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer and to create innovative digital solutions that make a difference to the lives of our 22 million users.
Cloud Infrastructure Engineers are responsible for the implementation and operation of secure and highly available computing platforms, products, and networks. They, build, maintain, upgrade, and continuously improve DWP’s cloud infrastructure and services. They also maintain the ongoing reliability, performance, and support of the infrastructure. This includes:
- Delivery, administration and maintenance of shared cloud infrastructure services that are used to host and support DWP applications.
- Ensuring availability, reliability, resilience and security are designed into services to ensure they provide a stable platform for hosting business applications.
- Providing self-service and automated, repeatable solutions to accelerate application development and to reduce toil and duplication.
- Monitoring the operating environments.
- Responding to incidents and problems.
Job description
As a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, you will work in an agile multidisciplinary team building and operating products and services that are consumed by the rest of DWP Digital.
You will build centralised, shared cloud infrastructure services that allow application teams to build, deploy and scale applications quickly to serve our citizens. Our infrastructure hosts applications that serve 22 million citizens, making around £177 billion in payments each year.
You will design, implement, administer and support cloud infrastructure technologies, solutions and services such as:
- Networking and Cloud connectivity.
- Continuous integration.
- Infrastructure as Code.
- PaaS and SaaS services.
You will be working across one or more of these services, liaising with other technical teams, with the autonomy to identify and build the right solution to meet user needs.
You will have a deep understanding of cloud tools and technologies, especially around infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud networking.
You will have an appreciation of information security, designing solutions and services with security controls embedded, specifically engineered as mitigation against security threats as a core part of the solutions and services.
As part of the team you will support products (in-hours and on-call), ensuring that the right actions are taken to investigate, resolve and anticipate problems.
You will have line-management responsibilities, and provide technical support and assistance to junior team-members.
You will communicate with others in a clear, honest and enthusiastic way in order to build trust, and be able to explain complex issues in a way that is easy to understand.
Person specification

- Implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using Gitlab or equivalent.
- Writing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code.
- Azure Networking.
- Developing and supporting Azure cloud-based or containerised applications.
- Writing and maintaining Python, or a similar programming language.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.
Salary Information
Pay for this role is from £52,412 - £68,517.
The maximum salary for the grade is £63,517, however a Digital Allowance of up to £5,000 per annum is available for exceptional candidates.
Digital Allowance is non-salary, and non-pensionable, and is classed as a temporary allowance. It is reviewed annually where it could be retained, amended, or removed.
Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.
Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.
Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

Selection process details
Stage 1: Application
As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a CV and Personal Statement. Further details around what this will entail are listed on the application form.
Your application will consist of three parts:
1. A Personal Details application form.
2. Your Employment History detailing your responsibilities, skills, accomplishments, plus your qualifications and relevant training. Please copy this information into the box field provided.
3. Personal Statement up to 1000 words.
When giving details in your Employment History and Personal Statement you should highlight your experience in line with essential criteria listed in the Person Specification.
The sift panel will use the information in your Employment History and Personal Statement to assess your experience, skills and knowledge against the essential criteria above.
Applications will be sifted at regular intervals from the date the posts are advertised. Please apply as soon as you can, do not wait until the end of the campaign.
You will receive one combined score for both your Employment History and Personal Statement, which will be provided in your Personal Statement score.

Stage 2: Interview
If you’re successful at sift stage you will be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams. There, you will be assessed against the experiences listed in the essential criteria.
