We are the Government’s statutory advisor for the natural environment, playing a vital role in delivering the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan. This describes an ambitious vision, bringing new opportunities to protect and enhance, and to achieve real outcomes for the environment.

Specialist Science and Evidence - an evidence-led organisation that is driven by science

Managing the Organisation – gathering business data to enable decision-making.

Job description

We have two types of role available.

1. Marine Senior Adviser- strategic (national)
2. Area Team Marine Senior Adviser including Offshore Wind

Role 1: Marine Senior Adviser- strategic (national)

These roles will be working on projects to maximise recovery and resilience within the marine environment.

Work area may cover (but not be limited to)

• Evaluation of scope to improve (non-fisheries) Good Environmental Status indicators through Natural England’s statutory functions and advice to regulators, and by refinements of ways-of-working
• Net gain (marine/intertidal). Leading running projects and strategic thinking on net gain in the marine environment
• Marine Climate Change. Developing this work area so marine climate change is integrated into our marine work across the organisation, providing a leading role in continuing and expanding Blue Carbon work and the importance of marine habitats to Net Zero targets.

Role 2: Area Team Marine Senior Adviser including Offshore Wind

These roles are based in our Area Teams and will:

• Support marine advisers in the team
• Actively lead on complex fisheries work
• Lead on high profile and contentious casework
• Lead on high profile NSIPs e.g. Tees Net Zero
• Oversee and lead the following work areas: conservation advice, SSSI monitoring and MCZ condition assessments
• Manage projects across the range of our marine delivery, working closely with other bodies within the Defra network (e.g. Marine Management Organisation (MMO), Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), Environment Agency (EA) and Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCAs))
• Act as a key reference point and source (internally and externally) of detailed expertise and objective advice across the full range of our marine delivery in a specific local delivery area.

These roles may involve working outside, and regular travel including to sites which are not accessible by public transport so a driving license is essential.

We have a number of roles available. Some roles on offer can only be done from specific offices. This includes Area Team roles where you would be expected to be based in the team’s geographic area. Some National Team roles have ‘hubs’ where you would be expected to join the rest of the team in a specific office. Many roles in National Teams can be undertaken from any office.

• A relevant degree or equivalent relevant experience (essential)
• A working knowledge of Natural England’s marine work (essential)
• Knowledge of marine ecology, processes and biodiversity in UK waters (essential)
• Knowledge of current and planned policies, legislative frameworks and drivers for the marine environment combined with a practical understanding of the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders in the marine field (desirable)
• Experience of delivering the following within marine: complex casework, fisheries casework, conservation advice, condition assessments (desirable)
• Experience of planning, monitoring and delivering projects (desirable)
