Job summary
The AI Safety Institute is the first state-backed organisation focused on advanced AI safety for the public interest. Scaling it is a critical project and a once-in-a-generation moment.
We have already built one of the world’s leading AI research teams and most innovative bodies in a government, which includes senior alumni from OpenAI, DeepMind, top startups, and senior offices across government. Our team is pioneering AI evaluations and other areas in safety research, and we have a significant impact on both companies and governments globally.
Building a top-tier AI team inside government is an experiment – one we see as critical to get right. Joining our mission-driven team represents a unique opportunity to deliver the vision in this constantly evolving area of innovation and policy.
Job description
The AI Safety Institute is the closest thing to a start up in government. The talent team is responsible for scaling this start up from the ground up. ML researchers sit in the most competitive talent field in the world, and we aspire to work with the best. Your aim will be to build the world’s leading AI safety team, thereby building a key pillar in the world’s response to this rapidly advancing technology.
You take the lead on developing AISI’s talent brand, market engagement, events programme, and headhunting strategy. You’ll also work with closely with our hiring managers to generate and land dozens of candidates for our senior London and San Francisco roles.
This is not your normal civil service team – we have built a reputation for getting things done, challenging the status quo, and navigating ambiguity. We are looking for proactive problem solvers with experience in building organisations that have genuine passion for AISI’s mission.
Person specification
You’ll be a great fit for our team if
- You’re amazing with people. You can quickly build relationships and break into new networks.
- You’re quick, autonomous, adaptable. You can drive projects and problem solve in a quickly evolving environment.
- You have an eye for brand and user experience. You notice when something isn’t working, whether that be a pitch or a process, and you can quickly transform it.
- You are excellent at delivering through others. You can get both more junior and more senior people across the team to contribute to your work in an organised, timely, effective way.
- You’re excited about learning a lot. You’ll need to develop an understanding of every function in our organisation, talent networks in multiple fields, and many government processes.
- Ideally, you have a track record of leading successful sourcing or marketing projects, and you’ve worked with technical staff. If you have different experience, just be prepared to pitch us on how it transfers and on your ability to learn fast.
- You care about AI going well and believe in the government's ability to help.
