Job description

The post provides an opportunity to join an internationally respected, dynamic and active team conducting and leading on fisheries science, assessments and management advice to national and international marine management organisations including Defra, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the EU, and ICES.

You will be expected to work with national and international scientific and management organisations making a real impact to marine environmental management and policy. Travel, both domestic and overseas is to be expected, with the possibility of participating in fieldwork.
You will have responsibility for designing, developing and utilising population models of both fish and shellfish stocks. You will initiate, conduct and develop scientific and statistical assessments of marine data sets, fish and shellfish stocks and the impacts of fishing on the marine ecosystem to provide advice on fisheries and marine ecosystem management to Cefas, Defra and other national and international bodies.

Key work areas include monitoring and assessment of fish and shellfish stocks, their associated environment, and the impact of fishing on ecosystems and the impact of environmental change on fish and shellfish stock productivity.

You will develop and interpret scientific analyses to provide analytical and advisory support on the assessment of marine fish and shellfish stocks, the marine environment, and associated fisheries and management options.

Duties will include the design and development of novel population/fishery models, data analysis and ad hoc numerical and statistical modelling, report writing and presentation of results and advice to a wide range of national and international customers. You will be innovative, well-motivated and flexible with good communication skills, you will be capable of both independent working and working within multi-disciplinary international teams.

The roles will require statistical and numerical programming, statistical analysis, project management, report writing and presentation skills.

Cefas actively supports staff development and opportunities for additional professional training and development are available.

• Experience of application of statistical / mathematical programming and data analysis

• Knowledge and experience of high level programming and statistical languages (R / C++)

• Knowledge of ecology and/or biology.

Experience in collaborating with other scientific institutes, experience of stock assessment of, or research on, ecological or renewable resources, experience in Template Model Builder/ADMB and the ability to identify additional national or international business opportunities in fisheries research are also highly desirable.

Academic qualifications required for direct entry to this Cefas Payband 6 post is a degree with a high level of numerical, mathematical and statistical content, or equivalent experience.
