Job description

Duties will include the design and development of hardware and software (both embedded and desktop) and associated hardware for use in new generations of intelligent instruments and sensors to be used for oceanographic, survey and fisheries applications.
It will also include support, maintenance and enhancement of systems already in production.


Main duties will include:
• Working in multidisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers to develop autonomous monitoring systems to make measurements in ocean influenced environmental conditions.
• Designing, developing and commissioning electronic microcontroller-based embedded systems to interface sensors and instruments for data analysis and capture.
• Analogue and digital circuit design.
• Use of standard laboratory test equipment, oscilloscopes, logic analysers etc.
• Designing and developing embedded firmware in ‘C’ & PC (.NET) application software, to control instruments and displays
• Assisting with project and team management by providing detailed and realistic estimates for project tasks.


• Experience in the design of component level analogue circuitry. Plus, interfacing of analogue signals to the digital domain.
• Experience in the design of digital circuits and data transmission methods.
• Experience in writing, testing and commissioning embedded micro-control software.
• Skills in component level debugging are essential.
• An understanding of Integrated Development Environments, compilers, debuggers, code optimisers etc. would be an advantage.
• Experience of low-power circuitry would be an advantage.
• Knowledge of sensors, subsea and battery-operated equipment would be an advantage.
• You should be self-motivated and able to prioritise your workload effectively.
• Excellent problem solving and communication skills and the ability to be an effective team member are also required.
• You should be an innovator who is capable of considering the wider implications of the task being undertaken.
• Enthusiasm for our work and excellent communication skills are essential.


You may be required to carry out trials and commissioning of instruments at sea from research vessels and small boats, carry out fieldwork in support of geophysical and biological projects, handle instruments and assemble on moored platforms and potential travel in the UK and abroad.
