Job description

Cefas is seeking to appoint an environmental impact advisor experienced with fisheries to join a dynamic and diverse team. You will provide authoritative scientific and technical advice on fisheries, underwater noise, impingement, entrainment, thermal and chemical discharges, suspended sediments and sedimentation during construction for regulatory assessment on the potential risks and impacts to the marine environment from a range of human activities. There will be opportunities to work on multi-disciplinary projects alongside coastal geomorphologists, water quality specialists and ecosystem modellers.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The main focus of the role will be to:
• support the provision of specialist fisheries advice to regulatory departments on the potential marine environmental impacts of licence applications for development in the marine environment under the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) and the Planning Act (2008);
• ensure advice provided by Cefas internal fisheries specialists is quality assured
• provide support to customers engaged in the regulation of human activities in the marine environment through answering queries and the provision of information and data.

The position requires stakeholder engagement with marine development applicants, statutory consultees and collaboration with Cefas fisheries and underwater noise experts. An essential part of the position is to critically assess, evaluate and advise on the sufficiency and accuracy of fish ecology and fisheries information, such as fisheries surveys and data which are presented in marine development applications. Therefore, you will be familiar with the ecology of both marine demersal and pelagic species and understand those aspects of the ecology of commercially important marine fish that are of importance to fisheries management. You will be expected to support senior advisors through the provision of information and data on issues pertaining to human activities and their potential impacts on the marine environment. Additionally, you may be expected to contribute to and support the provision of specialist underwater noise advice to the regulators and it would be beneficial if you understand underwater noise modelling and techniques.

In the role, you will be expected to develop excellent working relationships with the Sustainable Science for Marine Management team, Social & Economic Assessments team and Cefas specialist advisors from a range of disciplines (including coastal processes, benthic ecology, plankton, chemistry etc.,) and develop good working relationships with regulatory and policy customers in other sections of government, industry representatives and national and international colleagues as necessary.

You will be expected to travel within UK for short meetings, and potentially within western Europe for scientific meetings.

Cefas actively supports staff development and opportunities for additional professional training and development are available.

Person specification

• Ideally you should have experience of participating in local or national meetings in relation to marine fisheries or fisheries stakeholder engagement.
• Experience of marine environment impact assessment related to the impact of human activities in the marine environment is preferable.
• Previous environmental fieldwork, fisheries survey experience or fisheries related data collection and application would be beneficial.

Qualifications

Degree in aquatic or environmental science and some relevant work experience relating to the ecology of marine fish or marine licensing.
