Service Designers at DWP work to understand end-to-end user journeys and whole services, identify service patterns and use prototypes to test services in order to meet user needs and business objectives. They help to reduce operational cost and make things easier and simpler for users. They work alongside other Designers, Researchers and Product Owners to design services for the people who use them.
This role is focussed in Health Digital and we are responsible for a number of existing services which support society. We are seeking to transform the way citizens get the support they need. Working alongside policy, strategy, service delivery and cross-government digital areas we are designing the Health services of the future looking to how we can make improvements and release value early and regularly while we aim towards a future vision of joined up health services which meet user needs and align with departmental strategy.

As a Senior Service Designer, you’re an experienced practitioner who will drive improvements which result in successful outcomes for both users and DWP.
You will visualise whole services, both end-to-end and front-to-back, across business areas or departments, identifying opportunities and problems, whilst leading small multidisciplinary team and working with senior stakeholders to establish service design methods.
You will lead communication with stakeholders, lead workshops, and support strategy and decision making across a team or business area. You will define good practice and make sure that useful guidance, tools and patterns are available across services and teams to solve recurring problems for users. You will support the service design community by organising or taking part in meet-ups to share work both internally and externally.
ResponsibilitiesYour responsibilities will include but are not restricted to, the following:
• demonstrating excellent working knowledge of service design in practice, understand user needs and design services that meet them.
• collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to understand user behaviour and feedback.
• leading workshops to drive actionable outcomes.
• working in a highly collaborative way to create quality service design deliverables, including experience maps and service blueprints.
• analysing research findings, data, insight gathering, and lead concept generation.
• aligning and supporting communication with product owners and policy colleagues to define the customer journey and articulate the vision for products and services.
The ideal candidate for this role will be able to demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• can demonstrate experience designing user centred end to end services which meet user needs and business objectives.
• have substantial experience applying user research and data to make design decisions, and of explaining these in a way that other people understand.
• can work in multidisciplinary teams in a user-centred design process.
• have experience of consulting regularly with senior stakeholders to provide analysis and recommendations.
• have experience working from a digital perspective, including iterating service design for complex situations and difficult or technical problems and processes.

Salary for this role is from £49,171 (Band min) to £59,589 (Band max).
Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.
Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.
Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.
This role can be based out of either Blackpool, Newcastle or Leeds corporate hub locations.
The Department is committed to promoting flexible ways of working, whilst enabling the business to operate at maximum efficiency and will expect colleagues to work from a blend of locations, including some time working at home, as required. The corporate hub location will be the designated place of work and any remote or home working arrangement does not constitute a change to your designated place of work or contractual Terms and Conditions.
