Job summary

Resettlement Services is fast paced, complex, high profile and hugely rewarding directorate which sits within Customer Service Group (CSG). The successful candidate will play a central role in helping at risk people reach safety in the UK and ensuring that they have the appropriate status to establish their life when they get here.
There are several UK resettlement or relocation schemes (the UK Resettlement Scheme, the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) and the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS). You should be comfortable working at pace in a complex, fast-moving, multi-stakeholder environment with high levels of senior visibility. You will need to work collaboratively, be up for building strong relationships quickly, and be able to influence through others. You will be an inspirational and visible leader who champions diversity. The role will report to the Director of Resettlement Services, John Hawkins, who is also the SRO for Resettlement Services. You will work jointly with other Deputy Directors, and the wider operational teams within Resettlement Services to ensure successful delivery of our commitments and focused on delivery. 
This role will have regular engagement with Ministers and Home Sec as well as 2nd Perm Sec and Cabinet office, providing strategic oversight and guidance to Home Office Ministers and Senior Home Office Leadership as a subject matter expert. You will manage stakeholder communications and form collaborative relationships with key stakeholders both internally and externally and build consensus across a large and often diverse group of stakeholders.

Key responsibilities include: 

This is a key leadership role, responsible for the performance and delivery of geographically dispersed operational teams.  Operating as part of a small leadership team in a high profile and area they will be responsible for delivering change in a fast-changing operational environment. The role will involve handling a large amount of complex information and working collaboratively with colleagues across the whole of Government. Regular contact with Ministers is required as is representing the department at senior level meetings.

  • The post holder will be an active member of the senior leadership, gaining the trust of Ministers and senior officials to shape the direction of travel and ensure successful delivery.  
  • Strong people management skills, with a proven track record of building and leading large, diverse, high performing teams.
  • Lead service delivery and multiple operational teams, providing strategic direction, oversight and support, and ensuring that corporate responsibilities are promoted and delivered.
  • Active member of the Senior Leadership Team, contributing to the wider department's agendas, and providing visible, accessible and effective senior leadership, taking a personal lead in communicating messages with clarity and conviction.
  • Create and sustain effective relationships with internal stakeholders including Ministers, and the Permanent Secretary and key external stakeholders (Local Government and Local Authorities) to develop strong working across Home Office to create powerful, purposeful partnership.
  • Role model exceptional leadership, working flexibly across boundaries, building capabilities and undertaking regular activity to build and sustain engagement.
  • Participate in on-call senior level duties at weekends and outside of usual office hours.
  • Provide sign off to PQs, FOIs and MP correspondence and be prepared to brief Ministers and engage with external commercial partners.
  • The postholder will be expected to be a visible leader, attend their workplace regularly and be prepared to regularly travel to other Home Office locations.
  • Finally, the postholder will be expected to be an important member of the corporate leadership of the Hone Office, promoting One Home Office and Civil Service reform (www.civilservice.go.vuk/reform) and contributing to the Home Office and wider Civil Service efficiency agendas.

Selection process details

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate their knowledge, experience, capability and behavioural approach to a high standard against the following key criteria: 

  • Proven track record in running large scale complex operations.
  • Inspirational leader with passion for leading and empowering diverse and geographically dispersed teams
  • Ability to build strong relationships and work effectively and collaboratively with a range of OGDs and partners.
  • Ability to work strategically and analytically and use data to make decisions.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the immigration system or other complex operational organisations.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Understanding of managing commercial contract and / or grants
  • Experience of working in immigration / migration
  • Clear record of success in delivering change

This role has a minimum assignment duration of 3 years. An assignment duration is the period of time a Senior Civil Servant is expected to remain in the same post to enable them to deliver on the agreed key business outcomes.
