You will be able to work from either our FCDO office in London or East Kilbride (please note that this office will move to central Glasgow in 2025). Regular travel between FCDO Headquarters (London and East Kilbride) required.

Job summary

As Deputy Chief Economist (Development) in FCDO you will work in the central Economics & Evaluation Directorate (EED), which sits within DG Economics, Climate and Global Issues, and provide lead Development Economist expertise in FCDO, supporting the Chief Economist in providing economic advice to the Foreign Secretary on all the UK’s foreign and development policy.


EED aims to be one of the leading UK authorities on the international economy. Increasing the impact of FCDO activities by delivering evidence-based analysis and advice for senior decision makers and Ministers and through advancing the practice and use of evaluation across FCDO. Deputy Chief Economist (Development) will play a key role in influencing and informing the implementation of the International Development White Paper and UK efforts to get SDG’s back on track.

You must be a British Citizen at the time of application. This role requires you to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance.

Psychometric profiling will not result in a pass or fail decision. Rather, they are designed to support the panel’s decision making and highlight areas for the panel to explore further at interview.

Interview Process

If you are successful at the application stage, you will be invited to attend a panel interview in order to have a more in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification.
The interview will be a blended assessment consisting of a series of questions against the Civil Service Success Profiles Behaviours, Experience and Technical details of which can be seen in the essential criteria.

Candidates may be required to complete a Technical exercise on the day of interview. Full details of the assessment process will be made available to shortlisted candidates.
There will be a 3-4 -person interview panel chaired by Adnan Khan, Chief Economist and Director of Economic & Evaluation, FCDO.


Please note that the FCDO will not reimburse any travel costs or expenses incurred as part of the selection process. Details of all Panel members will be made available to shortlisted candidates.


Current FCDO staff members are advised that this is an external campaign and, as such, you will be required to go through the same process as all other candidates.

This role has a minimum assignment duration of 3 years. An assignment duration is the period of time a Senior Civil Servant is expected to remain in the same post to enable them to deliver on the agreed key business outcomes. The assignment duration also supports your career through building your depth of expertise.
