About us

 The Government Actuary’s Department (GAD) is a well-established organisation in the heart of government which uses statistical analysis and probabilistic financial models to assess a wide range of risks facing the public sector.  Using these techniques, we aim to enhance the stewardship of public sector finances by providing expert advice to government departments in areas including contingent risks, insurance, pensions, and social security.

The Analytical Solutions Team comprises around 80 analysts and actuaries and works across a wide and growing range of analytical areas including social security, funded and unfunded pensions, as well as bespoke analysis and model building for Government. The team serves as a platform for innovation and change within GAD. We will look to you to pro-actively contribute to this by embracing new technologies and ways of working as well as spread their use across GAD. You will be a key member of our Analytical Solutions Team working alongside analysts with a broad range of experience from across the Civil Service and the private sector.

Job description

Main duties of the job

You will:

  • Work collaboratively with a range of internal stakeholders to aid the delivery of model quality assurance projects that the Department is commissioned to undertake.
  • Lead, develop, and coach on best practice processes, procedures and culture for the organisation on the quality assurance of code, analysis and modelling.
  • Support capability building initiatives to ensure that relevant people are aware of modelling quality assurance best practices and can use them.
  • Work with other quality assurance and modelling stakeholders across the organisation.
  • Contribute to the expansion of GAD's model quality assurance offering to enhance the business portfolio.
  • Be familiar and well-practised at defining a project delivery plan.

    Person specification

    You will become an integral part of the Analytical Solutions Team with broad influence throughout the organisation. Your primary responsibility will be ensuring the successful execution of diverse and sometimes unpredictable model QA projects undertaken by the team. This role requires the capability to adapt existing knowledge to novel and unfamiliar circumstances.

    You will work collaboratively with a wide variety of stakeholders to:

    • Lead the end-to-end delivery of model quality assurance projects, including defining project scopes, monitoring outputs, managing budgets, and ensuring timely delivery with a focus on client value through effect project management procedures.
    • Mobilise versatile team members and leverage diverse skill sets to effectively execute projects.
    • Establish and maintain a comprehensive resource bank to facilitate successful model QA project deliveries.
    • Plan, organise, and conduct relevant training sessions to address internal capability gaps.
    • Lead, develop and coach on best practice approaches, procedures and culture for the organisation on the QA of analytical models.
    • Foster a culture of continuous improvement to enhance both the quality and efficiency of model QA project deliveries at GAD.
    • Consistently provide high-quality advice, utilising innovative approaches, adapting to changing client needs, and adhering to GAD guidance and professional standards.
