Technology, data, and digital services underpins everything that HSE does. We are a knowledge organisation, with a wealth of experience in keeping people safe. It is the responsibility of the Information and Technology Services (ITS) Division to ensure that everyone in the organisation can access our data and information, to share it and to use it to make effective decisions. We support over 3000 colleagues working in a hybrid style at home and in 26 offices across Great Britain. Our services keep inspectors functioning effectively and efficiently on industrial sites nationwide, from oil platforms in the North Sea to our deepest mines and quarries.

Our end user computing devices are leading edge, and we are making significant progress in delivering new cloud based services. Part time working hours are available for this role. We can accept part time applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 30 hours (4 days) per week.

Job description

HSE’s Information and Technology Services Division includes a Security Team which covers physical, personnel and cyber security as well as business continuity and resilience.  This is an exciting opportunity to deliver effective and continuously improve physical and personnel security. This will involve providing measured solutions to mitigate a variety of threats and ensuring compliance against government standards (including GovS007) and aligning with accredited best practice. 

As well as managing a small team, the successful candidate will be required to lead and direct people from other directorates within HSE to develop the wider security culture.  This will involve running working groups, delivering security education briefs as required and reviewing and constantly updating the security induction process. 

This role will also require working closely with other government departments and being able to discuss complex security issues with and seek advice from the national technical authorities where required. The successful candidate will also be responsible for triaging physical and personnel security incidents and coordinating resilience response with direction from the Head of Security. 

The role will deliver second line assurance for all physical and personnel security element of HSE. The role holder will review security incidents on a monthly basis, produce monthly statistics and conduct trend analysis in a reporting format that can be briefed up to Board level as required.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead on all elements of physical and personnel security within HSE
  • Investigate security incidents including; conducting initial triage, investigation and producing reports with recommendations.
  • Deliver security education as required, utilising available training materials as well as self-generated briefs and security messages.
  • Conduct second line assurance for physical and personnel security
  • Produce Security Risk assessments for all areas where mandated standards are not met.
  • Ensure compliance with government standards Work closely with other government departments and national technical authorities to ensure HSE receives the best possible security advice and that any best practice is incorporated into standard practice for HSE

Person specification

    Essential Skills:

    • Good communication skills both verbal and written including articulating security solutions in clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences
    • Proven ability within the physical and personnel security profession including the practical implementation of security solutions.
    • Personal resilience and the ability to work under pressure including managing Security Incidents which can develop at pace
    • Effective working knowledge of Security Risk Management including creating and presenting security Risk assessments for stakeholders.
    • Experience of implementing government or industry security standards across an organisation such as GovS007 
    • Experience of working closely with other stakeholders including wider government departments and national technical authorities.

    Desirable

    • Membership of the Security Institute or similar body desirable
