We’re looking for an exceptional Commercial Manager to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Commercial Manager, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Job description

Your world of expertise

The Commercial Manager sits within the Operational Function (Ops) of the wider Commercial Team, part of the Chief Financial Officer Directorate. As a Commercial Manager, you will lead and manage the operational aspects of the commercial function, ensuring that the Met Office delivers value for money and achieves its strategic objectives. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, to provide expert advice and guidance on commercial matters. You will also oversee the development and implementation of sourcing strategies, contract management, procurement processes, and supplier performance management. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant policies, regulations, and standards, as well as promoting best practices and continuous improvement in the commercial function.

Your key duties

  • Work alongside stakeholders to identify and agree present and future needs, linkages to other areas of activity and related potential needs for Commercial.
  • Evaluate specific Commercial risks and apply appropriate risk mitigation techniques.
  • Lead on the end-to-end strategic procurement (implement premarket engagement, understand market models and market shaping, develop bidders’ packs, review and clarify the specification, apply the most appropriate evaluation strategy and diligently progress to contract award).
  • Use e-sourcing/e-tendering tools to support the Commercial lifecycle.
  • Apply the principles of supplier and contract management.

Person specification

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

  • Keep evolving – Fully qualified to MCIPS or equivalent, or working towards.
  • Expert by nature – Ability to understand and follow the compliance and assurance of operational procurements throughout the commercial lifecycle using various routes to market.
  • Better Together – Ability to demonstrate strong communication skills at all levels, both internally and externally when required.

As our Commercial Manager, your total reward package will be up to £60,139 annually, which includes:

  • £41,725 base pay.
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%.
  • In addition you will be paid £2,500 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2024 until March 2026 in your monthly pay.
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave.
